Foundation system (ground screws or concrete pad)
All studios require a foundation. The most suitable option and final cost will be confirmed following a site visit.
Ground screws are an eco friendly alternative to concrete pad. 100mm in legnth - they are an adjustable foundation system allows accurate levelling and long-term stability without trapping moisture at ground level.
Concrete pad is a great option where ground conditions are unsuitable, there are underground service pipes and cables or the site is greatly sloped.
2. Structural timber frame
Sturdy 4"x2" C24 grade pressure treated timber. Coated with bitumen on underside to ensure no damp rises from ground.
A full structural frame provides rigidity and longevity that lightweight stud systems cannot match.
3. High-performance insulation
Floor - 50mm and Ceiling 75mm. Celotex for maximum thermal efficiency. Insulation taped to cover all joins and include the thermal efficiency even more.
Insulation thickness and type are specified for year-round occupation, not just to meet a marketing claim of “fully insulated”.
4. Vapour control layer
Tyvek breathable membrane for superior air and moisture management.
This layer significantly reduces the risk of interstitial condensation, a common issue in poorly detailed garden rooms.
5. External cladding system
Cladco Box profile plastisol coated steel sheet - 32/1000 profile, 0.7mm thick.
Manufactured in the UK and known for their high strength, durability and weather resistance.
6. Floor build up
22mm moisture resistant - T&G chipboard flooring to prevent air gaps between boards.
A well insulated floor build-up improves comfort underfoot and reduces heat loss, often overlooked in standard garden rooms.
7. Interiors Package (optional)
Interior finishes can be tailored to how you plan to use the space. As a guide we use 9mm MDF T&G - painted to your colour choice, Oak Laminate Flooring, painted skirting. We can also include specialist insualtion (eg for soundproofing), ply wall cladding, plastered & painted walls.
Based on commonly published online specifications.
The standard design is designed to fit comfortably within permitted development limits — no planning permission required in most gardens.
Our garden rooms are all based on the same core design principles — proportions, materials, insulation build-up and detailing — but are regularly adapted to suit different gardens and uses.
Total footprint: 4.5 m × 2.4 m × 2.5 m (height)
Internal floor area: approximately 10.5 m²
In practice, most clients want something slightly larger, longer, or configured differently — for example to suit a garden boundary, include storage, or create distinct zones.
We usually begin with our standard Studio and Timber design and adjust proportions from there.
If you like the look of our studios, but think you might need something larger or set out differently,
that’s exactly how most projects start.
Louise's Garden Office Studio - Woodbridge, Suffolk.
After a few years of working from the dining table, Louise was ready for a proper workspace at home. She wanted someone local and had been looking at off-the-shelf garden offices online, but quickly realised many were closer to sheds than real buildings – with poor insulation that would cost a lot to heat and be uncomfortable year-round.
She loved the unique Studio & Timber garden room design, and that she could choose the exterior finishes and colours to make it her own. Now she has a fully insulated space that feels like a natural extension of her home – warm, quiet and joyful to spend time in. She actually looks forward each morning to walking out to her garden room to start work.
